The Big Read 2013- February

The Big Read 2013- Heather- February Part 2

Up to 22 books now, the latest installment is:

View full image Ever After by Kim Harrison. This is number 11 in a long running series set in the Hollows, featuring witches, demons and vampires- as mostly normal folk.  I really enjoyed this book, I think Kim can see the end in sight- number 13 I think, and is moving the characters in place for the finale.

View full imageThrough the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi. This young adult novel is number 2 in a trilogy. It is very good. Set after an environmental disaster where the magnetosphere has disappeared letting in an alien atomsphere.  Some of the people have ensconced themselves in underground bunkers while others were left to fend for themselves. Years later the bunkers are failing and the storms are intensifying. What will happen to our two main characters Aria and Perry?  Thumbs up for this series.

There are still a few more that I need to add for February, I guess there will be a Part 3!

I see that Jeri has joined the fray. I also have a goodreads account that features this contest. When I figure out my account I'll post it here too.

Big Read- February Part 1

The Big Read 2013- Heather- February Part 1

Well I had a very good weekend reading wise. Stayed up waaaayyy to late on Saturday reading. I finished 3 books, two were very good and one not. I'll start with the Not.
View full imageS.E.C.R.E.T by L. Marie Adeline. This novel is getting a lot of talk in the media. It is from a Canadian author and is supposed to be the New Fifty Shades.  I did not like it, as far as erotica goes- blah.

Unravel Me (Shatter Me, #2) Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi. This is the second book of a series, I think a trilogy. It is a young adult novel. I really enjoyed it, hence staying up until 8 in the morning to finish.  At the end of the first book Shatter Me I was not so enthused. It seemed like the xmen but this novel was great.  Everyone is talking about Chapter 62- "very sexy" as my friend Monique says. I wonder how long I'll have to wait until the next (last?) book- sigh.

View full image Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor.  This is also the second book of a series, again a trilogy. It is also a young adult novel.  It is an angels and demons book- Seraphim and Chimera, set in world that is connected to Earth through portals.  This is a good series- lots of twists and turns and angst. The first book is called Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

I'll post the books I read at the beginning of the month is a later post.

Enjoying the Challenge.  Keep Reading.

The Big Read- January

The Big Read- January Reads for Heather

This will be a bit of a long post. I'm going to update all my reads for January.  Please take into account I was on vacation and enjoying some super fluff!

Darkness Reborn (Order of the Blade #5)Darkness Reborn by Stephanie Rowe

Darkness Surrendered (Order of the Blade #3)Darkness Surrendered by Stephanie Rowe
These are from her Order of the Blade series.  They are a lot like JR Wards series The Black Dagger Brotherhood.  Romance with a paranormal twist. I didn't get these through the library, bought them on my ipad.

The Vanishing Act

The Vanishing Act by Mette Jakobsen, is available as an interlibrary loan.  This book had great reviews but it made me mad. I can't stand little whispers that are never revealed!

View full imageThe Unnaturalists by Tiffany Trent. This is a young adult book. It is steampunk, which is a cross between the victorian age and the future. Pretend oil was never discovered. Got to love steampunk. Science is a religion in this rendition.  There will be a second book.

View full imageIced by Karen Marie Moning.  This is a new series following the completion of her Fever series. The world is the same but the main character is Dani O'Malley.  I really like Karen Marie Moning, although this book is a little creepy, the 14 year old protagonist is being scoped out by way older men- yuck.  Maybe she'll magically age as it is a book about the fae.

View full imageRebel Heart by Moira Young.  This is the second book of the Dustlands series.  It is a dystopian young adult book. They are worth reading.

Crescendo, Silence and Finale by Becca Fitzpatrick. The is a four book series called Hush Hush.  It is a young adult series.  I've read better but once I start I always feel I need to finish the series.  That explains why I'm still reading Anita Blake, Ha.
View full image The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde. Again this is a young adult book.  I love Jasper Fforde and have his newest Thursday Next book in my to read pile.  This is the start of a series. It is set in England as most of his work is. There is also a little bit of dystopian thrown in, most of his books feature that as well.  He is an excellent author but very unique. Try him out.

View full imageUnder the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi. Yet another young adult book set in a dystopian world.  The second of this trilogy is just out, have that waiting on my to read pile as well.  This is set after an environmental catastrophe where there are people living underground in sealed pods and the above people who are trying to make it living on the surface.  No magic in this series. It is good, give it a try.

View full imageShatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. Young adult. This part of a series, a trilogy I believe. There is a 1.5 short story that is available on e-book, Destroy Me. The second in the series has just been released- Unravel Me, on the waiting list for that one.
This series started out good but it is turning into the Xmen. We'll see how it goes.

View full imageNotorious Nineteen by Janet Evanovich. The 19th in the Stephanie Plum series. It was better than 18. Worth a giggle.

Well that's the end of January.  Give them a try.  I'll update February soon so the posts aren't so onerous.

The Big Read for 2013

Heather (that's me) the Children's Programmer here at the library has joined the 100 Book Celebration!

I keep track of all the books I read during the year (memory is going) and seeing as it is Sylvan Lake's 100th Birthday and the library is joining the celebration by having a 100 Book Challenge for 2013, I have decided to share with you my reading for the year.
From the get go I will warn you that I read mostly light fluffy stuff: lots of paranormal, young adult and female authors.
Let's start then.  This past week I read the first two books of a trilogy.
View full imageUnearthly by Cynthia Hand

View full imageHallowed by Cynthia Hand

This is a young adult trilogy. The third book is out, I'm on the waiting list.  It is about angels, angel-bloods (part human part angel) and dark wings (fallen angels). The newest craze is angels. This is a mediocre series, there are a lot of loose ends that I hope get picked up in the final book. Not a bad read.  Romance and teenagers, a little drama and death.

I will be posting the books I have read already this year in a future post.  I think I am at book 16.

Join the challenge!
The Big Read is a fabulous way to celebrate our centennial.
